Everything You Should Know About the Battle on Choice

If you’ve used any form of social media during the past few weeks, you likely have seen an infographic, an angry Tweet, or a proud rallying photo. A hot topic of discussion has been that of Roe v. Wade, which has been a contention and a conversation since the state of Texas successfully passed Senate Bill 8, a bill which bans abortion after 6 weeks.

While it is not uncommon for conservative states to write anti-choice legislation, it is uncommon for a bill to successfully surpass the scope of Roe v. Wade, which is precisely why Senate Bill 8 has ignited the recent conversation on choice. Senate Bill 8 can co-exist with Roe v. Wade for one reason, and that is because it empowers individuals to sue abortion providers rather than enabling the state to criminalize the medical practice of an abortion.

Though this bill only applies in the state of Texas, there has been a stirring apprehension nationwide as other conservative states, including Missouri, are already writing similar legislation. On top of this, Roe v. Wade is expected to be discussed in the Supreme Court on December 10 regarding a Mississippi abortion bill.

As you can imagine, this flood of information has resulted in collective dismay. However, it can also function as a call to action.

On October 2, 2021, there were countless Stop The Bans rallies nationwide. One took place here in St. Louis at the Old Courthouse, where people took to the streets and fought for their right to choose. Acts like these are so crucial especially in conservative states, where pressuring your elected officials is a significant action you can take personally. Another step you can take is donating to Pro Choice organizations that make it their life’s work to fight for rights like Roe v. Wade.

It can be easy to feel helpless, watching Roe v. Wade be up for debate. Whether Roe V. Wade impacts you personally or not, you should pay attention to the news and, more importantly, reach out to those who are affected.

Another important factor to consider is though Roe v. Wade impacts anyone who may need to seek an abortion, barriers against Roe v. Wade especially harms people with low income, young people, LGBTQ+ individuals, people of color and those who live in rural areas. It’s not just about the right to an abortion, it’s about having access to it in the first place and resources.

While we don’t know how the following months will unfold, it is within our capacity to provide resources and key action items:

  1. Educate yourself! Find out what anti-choice legislation exists in your state and what your elected officials believe.

  2. If your elected officials do not support the right to choose, call your elected officials. It may feel like a miniscule action, but even when you feel like things are out of control, you can make a call and speak your truth.

  3. Take to the streets! NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri is a great source to find current events that you can attend.

  4. Check-in with your loved ones. It may be something simple, such as a text message that says you are there for them or maybe even providing transportation for someone to receive the reproductive healthcare that is essential to their agency and safety.
